Pakistan become 3rd Worst country for most Internet Shutdowns in the World

According to recent research from VPN and cyber security provider Surfshark, Pakistan is 1 of the worst countries in internet shutdowns during the 1st half of the year.

During its biannual review, Pakistan implemented three of the 42 new internet bans worldwide. These restrictions were put in place after the arrest of their former Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 9.

During that period, social media websites such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter were blocked in Pakistan. Additionally, there were numerous reports of cellular network blockage across the country in the days following the arrest.

According to a Surfshark analysis for the first half of 2023, Pakistan comes in third place among countries with the most internet restrictions. The top two positions are held by Iran and India. Most of these internet blackouts happened in Asia, making it the region with the highest number of such restrictions.
